Curating Your Christmas List
a guide when feeling stuck
As Christmas finally approaches, I've started curating ideas for my wish list. Actually, I started months ago—thinking about what I need, what I want but don't want to spend money on, and what falls somewhere between desire and necessity. I began collecting links in my notes app, and while I was at it, a few thoughts popped into my head, things we all should consider during this season of gift-giving and receiving.
Things to Ponder:
Will I use this within the next six months?
Is this worth someone else’s money?
Am I adding this just to fill space, or do I actually want it?
The Rule of Three: One thing you want, one thing you need, and one thing meaningful.
Keep it affordable. Keep it doable. Keep it realistic.
One thing about my family—and the relentless gift-givers in my life—is that they really know how to give. It’s just who we are. We’ve always been the kind of family that sees something and immediately thinks, Oh, so-and-so would love this, and then buys it on the spot. My mom, for example, will send me letters, books, and trinkets that remind her of me, and I do the same for her. It’s something I find deeply special, a love language I share with those I care about.
Gifts, to me, are not something to be ashamed of. Yes, Christmas is about giving, but it’s also about celebrating and accepting gifts, too. I always get a thrill when I’m gifted something—it means someone thought of me, which creates a deeper connection. But let’s be honest: when giving is second nature, it doesn’t always play out in my favor. Some people need a little guidance when buying for others, and some are just hard to shop for. I’ve had my fair share of gifts that, let’s say, didn’t exactly spark joy.
So here’s my advice: don’t be cryptic. When someone asks what you like—TELL THEM. Avoid that awkward “I love ittttt, thank you!!!” while opening your 20th vanilla cupcake and peppermint twist-scented candle.
My wish list:
Assorted Mini Jam Advent Calendar
Gucci Lady Patent Slingbacks (a girl can dream)
Nora Ephron At The Movies Coffee Table Book
Now, I know this list spans a broad range, so don’t limit yourself! Be diverse! Don’t get stuck in just one category—whether it’s apparel, housewares, or home goods. You’re eclectic, my friend, someone who needs it all! Why settle for a single theme when you can have a smorgasbord of possibilities? Think of it as an all-you-can-eat buffet of wish list items—your future self will thank you.
That’s all for today tout le monde!
